If you are not getting 8-9 hours’ sleep a night, then your health is being affected.

Sleep is the most important time of the day for our mental and physical wellbeing.  It is during these hours that our bodies are working to support healthy brain function and maintain our physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Getting inadequate sleep over time can raise your risk for chronic (long-term) health problems.

There are numerous factors that can influence our sleep patterns including stress, menopause, anxiety, depression, other physical ailments, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, medication etc.

Looking at your diet and lifestyle can really help improve sleep.

Homeopathy is unique in that it can help address mental and emotional issues which are often the root cause of insomnia.

Useful remedies for insomnia

Arsenicum Album – can be really useful for sleep problems, especially if your sleep deprivation is accompanied by anxiety.  Often your worries can include health, yours and that of your loved ones, money, future etc.  You may well wake around 1-2am and you will have a lot of worry on your mind.

Coffea – Is your head is whirring with an overactive brain?  If you feel wired but still tired and are sensitive to noise at night and maybe have heart palpitations, then Coffea may well help.  The remedy is made from caffeine so think about how coffee might make you feel and the homeopathic version may well help with these symptoms.

Cocculus – If you are a shift worker or work nights, or maybe caring for an ill child or nursing a baby through the night then Cocculus could help you.  You will feel drowsy, restless, confused and exhausted but unable to sleep.

Nux Vom – if you have trouble switching off at night because you are thinking about work or other commitments then Nux Vom could be helpful.  Quite often you will find yourself thinking about the next day and what needs to be done.  You may well turn to alcohol or sleeping tablets to help alleviate your disturbed sleep.  You may wake at 4am and not be able to go back to sleep again which could make you feel grumpy the next day.

Passiflora – this is a great homeopathic sleep promoting remedy.  It can soothe any restlessness in the mind especially after a busy day.

Valerian – a more general sleep remedy for those with disturbed or nervous sleep and possibly with confused dreams

If you think any of the above insomnia pictures fit your sleep issues, then you can take 1 pill of the appropriate remedy ina 30c before bed or put one into a glass of water and sip throughout the evening before bed.  Repeat as often as necessary.  If you don’t see any improvement after 3 or 4 nights, then it may well be the wrong remedy and you might need a more individualised prescription from a qualified Homeopath.  Please get in touch if you would like an appointment.
